Tax-Related Impersonation Scams
Pause. Verify. Protect.
During tax season, scammers take advantage of heightened stress and deadlines by posing as tax agencies or government representatives. These messages often claim you owe back taxes, missed a filing deadline, or must act immediately to avoid penalties or legal consequences. The pressure to respond quickly is intentional and designed to prevent you from asking questions.
Tax-related scams may arrive as phone calls, emails, or text messages. Scammers may threaten wage garnishment, arrest, or loss of benefits if payment is not made right away. They often demand payment through unconventional methods or ask for sensitive personal information. These tactics are meant to intimidate and confuse.
It’s important to remember that government agencies do not demand immediate payment through text messages or emails. They also do not request sensitive information or payment without proper documentation and notice. If you receive a message that feels threatening or rushed, take a step back before responding.
